Eulogy to Selena by Victor Landa

         "It's a sin to kill a mockingbird," novelist Harper Lee warned us through his character Atticus Finch, because the only thing mockingbirds offer us is song. 
         Even the tone deaf cannot argue his point. Music is universal, it is not self-serving and its value lies in the intangible realm of the spirit. Music, even the song of a bird, belongs at once to no one and to everyone. 
         Maybe that's why the silencing of any songbird can sadden us so profoundly. And when the silencing is violent, the sense of loss is shocking. 
         If you are not a fan of Tejano music, you may be somewhat bewildered at the grief following the murder of singer Selena Quintanilla Pérez. 
         The circumstances are not notorious. Selena was gunned down by one of her closest and most ardent supporters over an employment dispute and allegations of fraud. 
         The song was suddenly silenced and with it there was a profound sense of loss. 
         Such was her popularity in the Hispanic community that she counted herself among those who are identified only by a first name. She was to everyone simply, Selena, and that was more than enough. 
         The sense of loss is very real - the images on countless news reports are witness to the fact. The disbelief is disturbing. What is most often said is, "Quién esperaba que fuera a suceder?" - who would have expected that to happen? The sadness is deep - many young Hispanic girls saw in her a world of possibility, so they mourn hope. 
         If anything can put the loss in perspective it is the hope that Selena seemed to personify for many in the Hispanic world. Her popularity came not only because of a prodigious voice, but also because she seemed to be so much like everyone else. 
         Her home was like ours. She lived next door to her parents in Corpus Christi, and she was planning the dream house that many of us also dream of. 
         Her laughter and enthusiasm were infectious, just like the laughter and enthusiasm of so many people we all know in our personal lives. And from a very humble beginning she had risen to international stardom, singing our music, being proud of it. 
         She stood for those who now mourn her, she was the face of a culture that is just now attaining long overdue recognition. We were proud of her because we are proud of ourselves. 
         And so our loss, our disbelief, and our sadness leave us with the certainty that the senselessness and the violence have gone too far. 
         The daily individual count of victims of violence scares us and saddens us. We feel for the families of those involved, we mourn the loss of such promise, and we wonder at how the families can cope. Those crimes affect us as witnesses to something that we have yet to put our finger on, but that we know is certainly decaying the fabric of our society. 
         But the murder of Selena seems different. Her life was of no greater value than that of the thousands (even millions) of victims before her. The difference is that she touched more of us. Our community had invested in her. We accepted what she gave us, and we gave her our admiration in return. 
         And so we are all at a loss. 
         If killing a mockingbird is a sin because the bird offers us only song, then what are we to expect from the killing of hope?

         Selena Quintanilla-Pérez was born on April 16, 1971 in Lake Jackson, Texas. 
At the age of nine, she began working to help support her family as the lead singer for Selena Y Los Dinos. It was the beginning of an outstanding career. 
         Selena's talents were recognized with numerous awards, including Female Vocalist of the Year and Performer of the Year at the Tejano Music Awards in 1987; a Grammy Award in 1993 for Best Mexican-American performance for her album "Selena Live"; Female Singer, Song and Album of the Year in 1993 from Premio Lo Nuestro, the Latin equivalent of the Grammys; and, in 1995, six Tejano Music Awards and another Grammy nomination for her song "Amor Prohibido". 
         She was as popular in Texas as she was in Mexico, and she had a long and impressive list of accomplishments at the age of 23. 
         This ambitious and determined young singer was a role model who inspired millions of people and broke through ethnic, cultural, age, and language barriers. 
         She represented the essence of South Texas culture and was identified as the girl from Corpus Christi who achieved international stardom but never forgot where she came from. 
         Her unprecedented fame did not sway her firm beliefs in education or her family values. She lectured at schools on the value of education, participated in the D.A.R.E. program, and was actively involved in the Coastal Bend AIDS Foundation. 
         Selena died March 31, 1995, one week before her first movie, Don Juan DeMarco, was released nationwide. 
         The loss of this talented young singer will be felt by millions who saw her not only as a singer, but also as a friend. Her music and special contributions to Texas, the United States, Mexico, and the world will continue to inspire people of all ages and cultures. 
         Therefore, I, George W. Bush, Governor of Texas, do hereby proclaim April 16, 1995, as:

SELENA DAY

in Texas, and urge the appropriate recognition thereof.

12th day of April, 1995.

         In addition to the Governor's memorandum, the 74th legislature of the State of Texas sought to "honor the life, career, and personal convictions of this self-made international star and acknowledge the impact that this young Tejana has had across the world" with an official tribute. Senate          Concurrent Resolution Number 116 was adopted by the Senate on April 3, 1995, and by the House on April 11, 1995, a week before what would have been Selena's twenty-fourth birthday.

         "Es un pecado matar a un sinsonte," nos advirtió el novelista Harper Lee a través de su personaje Atticas Finch, "porque la única cosa que nos afrecenlos sinsontes es una canción." 
         Hasta los que no tienen oído musical no peuden discutir su punto. La música es universal, no es egoísta y sus valores se encuentran en el reino intangibles del espíritu. La música, hasta la canción de un pájaro, pertenecen a nadie y a todos al mismo tiempo. 
         Tal vez eso es porque el silenciamento de cualquier pájaro cantante puede atristarnos tan profundamente y cuando el silenciamento es violento, el sentido de pérdida es espantoso. Si no eres un admirador de la música tejana, puedes tal vez estar un poco perplejo por el dolor que siguió el asesinato de la cantante Selena Quintanilla Pérez. Las circumstancias no son notables. 
         Selena fue asesinada por una des sus amigas más cercanas, de sus defensores más devotes sobre una pelea de empleo y acusaciones de fraude. 
         La canción fue de repante silenciada y con ella vino un sentido profundo de pérdida. 
         Su popularidad en al comunidad hispano era tal que ella se contaba como los que se identifican solamente por su primer nombre. Ella era sencillamente Selena para todos y eso es más que suficiente. 
         El sentido de pérdido es muy auténtico, los imagenes de los numerosos noticiarios son testimonios al hecho. La incredulidad es inquietante. Lo que se dice más seguido es, "¿Quién esperaba que eso fuera a suceder?" La tristeza es profunda. Varias miñas jóvenes hispanas vieron en ella un mundo de oportunidades, entonces lamentan la esperanza. 
         Si algo pudiese poner la pérdidad en perspectiva, sería la esperanza que Selena parecía personificar para muchos en el mundo hispano. Su popularidad llegó no solamente a causa de su prodigiosa voz, pero aun porque parecía ser igual que nosotros. 
         Su hogar era como el nuestro. Vivía al lado de sus padres en Corpus Christi y estaban planeando la casa de sus sueños, algo que a muchos de nosotros nos gustaría lograr también. Su risa y su entusiasmo eran infectuosos, igual que la risa el entusiasmo de tanta gente que conocemos todos en nuetras vidas. Y de un inicio muy humilde, había alcanzado un estrellato internacional, cantando nuestra música, y siendo orgullosa de esto. 
         Representaba los que ahora lloran por ella, era el nostro de una cultura que recién ahora está alcanzando el conocimiento muy atrasado. Estabamos orgullosos de ella porque estabamos orgullosos de nosotros mismos. 
         Entonces nuestra pérdida, neustra incredulidad y nuestra tristeza nos dejan con le certeza de que el insensatez y la violencia han ido demasiado lejos. 
         El número diario de las victimas de la violencio nos da miedo y nos da pena. Los acompañamos en el sentimiento a las familias involucradas, lamentamos la muerte de una tal promesa y nos preguntamos cuántas familias pueden dar abasto. Estos crimenes nos afectan como pruebad de algo que hemos captado hasta ahora, pero que sabemos que está pudriendo la estructura de nuestra sociedad. 
         Pero la muerte de Selena parece ser diferente. Su vida no tenía mas valor que la de miles (hasta millones) de victimas que la precedieron. La diferencia es que ella afectó a un número más grande de nosotros. Nuestra comunidad había invertido en ella. Aceptamos lo que nos dió, y le dimos nuestra admiración en cambio. 
         Y entonces no sabémos que hacer. 
         Si matar a un sinsonte es un pecado porque el pájaro solo nos ofrece una canción, entoncesiqué podemos esperar del asesinato de la esperanza?

         Selena Quintanilla-Pérez se nació el 16 de abril, 1971, en Lake Jackson, Tejas. 
         A los nueve años, se puso a trabajar como la cantante principal de Selena Y Los Dinos para ayudar la familia. Era el principio de una carrera extraordinaria. 
         Los talentos de Selena fueron reconocidos con numerosos premios, incluyendo Female Vocalist of the Year y Performer of the Year en los Tejano Music Awards en 1987; un premio Grammy en 1993 para el mejor acto mejicano-americano por su album "Selena Live"; Cantante femenina, Canción y album del Año en el año 1993 de Premio Lo Nuestro, el equivalente latino del Grammy; u, in 1995, seis Tejano Music Awards y otra nominación para un Grammy por su canción "Amor Prohibido". 
         Era popular en Tejas tanto como en Méjico, y tenía una lista larga y impresionante de logros al tener veinte y tres años. 
         Esta cantante joven, ambiciosa y determinada ear un modelo que inspiró a millones de personas y derrumbó las barreras étnicas, culturales, de edad y del idioma. 
         Representó la esencia de la cultura de Tejas del sur y se conocía como la chica de Corpus Christi que logró un estrellato internacional pero que no se olvidó nunca de donde venía. 
         Su fama sin precedentes no lo afectó en cuanto a sus creencias fuertes en la educación y los valores de la familia. Daba clases en las escualas acerca del valor de la educación, participó en el programa D.A.R.E., y estaba muy involucrada en el Coastal Bend AIDS Foundation. 
         Selena se murió el 31 de marzo, 1995, una semana antes de que su primera película se estrenó por todo el país. 
         La pérdidad de ésta cantante joven y con mucho talento será lamentado por millones que la vieron no solo como una cantante sino también como amiga. Su música y sus contribuciones especiales a Tejas, de los Estados Unidos, Méjico y el mundo seguirán inspirando a gente de todas edades y culturas. 
         Por lo tanto, Yo, George W. Bush, Gobernador de Tejas, por la presente, declaro el 16 de abril, 1995, come:

EL DÍA DE SELENA

en Tejas, y exhorto el reconocomiento de ello.

Reconociendo oficialmente de la presente,
firmo mi nombre este día, el 12 de abril, 1995

         Además del memorandum del Gobernador, la 74th Legislatura del Estados de Tejas intentó "honrar la vida, la carrera, y las convicciones personales de esta estrella internacional que ha triunfado por su propio esfuerzo y reconocer el impacto que esta joven tejana tuvo alrededar del mundo" con un tributo oficial. La Resolución Concurrente del Senado Número 116 fue adoptada por el Senado el 3 de abril 1995 y por la Casa de Representantes el 11 de abril 1995, una semana antes del día en el cual Selena hubiera cumplido veinte y cuatro años.
